SPARTANS LOOK STRONG AT "CLASSIC" PRELIMS

TRIGGS LIFTS 4X400 TEAM TO VICTORY AS BOYS TAKE FIRST; TEAMS COMBINE FOR 22 INDIVIDUAL , 8 RELAY FINALS BERTHS

4-2-2007 - In the most exciting 15 seconds of the Turpin track team's young season thus far, senior captain Jay Triggs captivated Milford's Eagle Stadium with an electrifying charge to end his leg of the 4x400 meter relay on Monday evening.  With the top two teams in each relay event advancing to Wednesday's finals, Triggs, Turpin's third runner, found himself in third with 150 meters to go in the leg.  With an incredible burst of speed, Triggs delivered the knockout blow to the teams from Milford and Loveland, opening a wide gap.  Danny Polaneczky finished off the effort, and Turpin's 4x400 team secured a spot in Wednesday's finals of the Coaches' Classic.

The Classic, Cincinnati's premiere regular season event, looks to be a near preview of this year's Regional Championships meet, and Turpin appears to be in good shape.  Both the boys and girls teams won 11 individual finals berths (top 4 finishers in individual events advance to finals) and 4 relay finals berths.

On the girls' side, junior Jesse Harrigan cruised to a first place finish in the 400 meters (1:03.70), and senior captain Meredith Jaworek (above) won the 3200 meters (11:43.80).  Turpin will send both Frances Litterski and Erin Kratzer to the 300 meter hurdle finals (49.90, 51.60, respectively), and Kristen Frooman and Deven Deans went 1-2 in the pole vault (9'0", and 8'6", respectively).  All four of the girls relays advanced to the finals, and promising freshman high jumper Alyssa Elliott jumped 4'8" en route to a finals berth.

The boys finished first overall in the qualifying district (there are four districts that qualify for Coaches' Classic).  Jay Triggs, in addition to his aforementioned performance in the 4x400, finished a close second in a very competitive 200 meters (23.10).  Mid-distance standouts Ben Wagner and Rob DiMartino each qualified to the finals in the 800 meters, going 2-3 (2:06.1, 2:06.6, respectively).  Senior captain Ryan Kiracofe was pushed by longtime friend Eric Finan of New Richmond to a first place finish in the 1600 meters, in a personal best time of 4:32.20.  Kiracofe returned to finish second in the 3200m, advancing along with junior Kyle Rewick (9:51.3, 9:51.5, respectively.  Like the girls team, the guys will send all 4 relay teams to the finals, fresh off of prelim victories by the 4x200 and 4x400 teams.  High jumpers Matt Cameron and JD Emery both will jump in Wednesday's finals, and Kevin Marshall qualified in the shot put.
