2006 GIRLS SEASON IN REVIEW
FAVC CHAMPIONS & STATE FINALISTS
WeekOneMOELLERHenryJacquezChallenge The Spartan girls started their season on a hot, hilly course at the Moeller Challenge, where the team's Big 3 runners would establish themselves as the city's best 1-2-3 punch right from the start. The team finished a respectable but unexciting third behind Colerain and Mercy, neither of which could foresee Turpin's team developing into the one that would repeatedly beat both by season's end. Junior Sam Patty showed everyone that she meant business in 2006 by taking 2nd overall in 19:35, behind Colerain's Erin Ragouzis. Senior captain Meredith Jaworek didn't start the season just how she liked, but still finished 3rd in 20:18. Sophomore Kaitlin Price started off another successful season with a 5th place finish (20:51). Turpin's x-factor all season long would be first-year runner Lauren Price, a junior. The team's improvement as a whole would hinge on Young's improvement in a huge way; the rookie would answer the call, and the Spartans' incredible late season run wouldn't have happened without her. As for week one, she was 18th in 22:13. Freshman Katie Nemann was 5th for the team, where she would remain for the majority of the season. She was a solid 33rd in 23:41. Jill Flannery and Jillian Jaworek were 37th (24:00) and 51st (26:09), respectively. In the girls rookie 2-mile, sophomore Miranda Schaffer was 1st in 14:37.
WeekTwoLAKOTAClassic In Turpin's first race against former coach Chip Dobson and Mason, the Spartans gave the #2-ranked Comets all they could handle. Turpin's girls finished a close second at Lakota, on a fast course at Voice of America Park. Finally looking her old self again, senior Meredith Jaworek flew to a second place finish. Sam Patty was 3rd, and Kaitlin Price finished a great 8th.
WeekFourALLIANCEInvitational
Senior Meredith Jaworek just kept rolling into week 4, as
she ran a season-best 19:02 in the mud at Alliance, powering the Spartan
girls to a second place finish. Sam Patty was 8th in 19:38, and
Kaitlin Price was 12th in 19:56. Lauren Young's times continued
dropping, as she was 35th in 20:34, and Jillian Jaworek scored for the
first time in her Turpin career; she was 65th in 21:27. Turpin
finished 26 points behind meet winners Alter. In the JV race,
senior Grania Frueh made her return to the JV team, which she led while
finishing 8th in 22:34.
WeekFiveMIDDLETOWNDickHopperInvitational The competitive low-point of the season for the girls team would be at Middletown, where the red-hot Spartans were downed by cross-district rivals Anderson by a single point. The loss stung for the entire varsity team, but was also viewed as a great motivator for the rest of the season. Using the memory of Middletown as fuel, the Spartans wouldn't let the Skins come back within striking distance for the rest of the season. The problem at Middletown was merely a sub-par performance from the pack. Although Sam Patty cruised to second place in 19:55, senior Meredith Jaworek struggled to finish 4th in 20:12. Kaitlin Price finished a somewhat disappointing 10th (20:39), Lauren Young was 19th (21:33), and Elizabeth Eickhoff scored her first points of the season. She was 23rd in 21:50. Katie Nemann was 25th in 21:51, and Jillian Jaworek was 29th in 22:21.
WeekSixST.XAVIERInvitational An angry Turpin team took to the course at St. Xavier feeling like it had something to prove, and did it ever. The Spartans sent a message to the entire city by winning their first meet of the season at St. X: this team, in any given race, can be very dangerous. Turpin beat McAuley and top-ranked Colerain en route to the meet championship. Sam Patty continued her mid-season roll, as she finished 5th in 19:19. Kaitlin Price was 13th in 19:45, but Meredith Jaworek struggled for the second week in a row. She finished 14th in 19:45, a shade behind Price. Lauren Young, however, continued dropping her times at an alarming rate, and a strong 21st place finish was the result (20:11). Katie Nemann re-established herself as the team's number 5 by finishing 38th in 20:37. The win at St. X would prove to be a launching pad for the late season success to come for the Turpin girls.
WeekSevenCENTERVILLEStampede The Spartans finished a strong second place at Centerville to perennial state powerhouse Bowling Green. Turpin beat a good McAuley team for the second consecutive week, and beat Anderson (9th) by 91 points. Despite not having the strongest performances from the front-runners, Turpin's pack was able to get the job done. Meredith Jaworek was 8th in 19:18, Sam Patty was 14th in 19:39, and Kaitlin Price was 24th in 19:59. Lauren Young's potential for improvement seemed boundless, as she ran a fantastic 20:08 to finish 27th. Katie Nemann was 46th in 20:25 to round out the scoring for Turpin. The pack's success created some nice momentum as the Spartans rolled into the FAVC Championships feeling pretty good about their postseason chances.

It was
an all-around great day for the Spartans, as the girls and boys swept
the conference championships for the first time since 1981. The
girls were pleased to win back the crown they'd lost in heartbreaking
fashion to Kings a year before. Meredith Jaworek and Sam Patty had
the finest 1-2 combined race that Turpin's seen in quite some time, as
Jaworek captured FAVC Champion and Runner of the Year honors for the
second
WeekNineDISTRICTChampionships The girls entered the 2006 postseason with high expectations: a 4th ever District Championship was on the team's mind at Voice of America Park in week 9. The Spartans would not come close, however, and considered themselves lucky to even be moving on to Troy after a poor performance in the postseason's first race. Turpin was 3rd overall, as the top 4 teams in each district advanced to the Regional Championship. Sam Patty was a bright spot for Turpin, as she claimed First Team All-District honors with her 4th place finish (20:02). Meredith Jaworek didn't have her best race, finishing 9th in 20:24. From there, Kaitlin Price was 18th (20:48), Lauren Young was 26th (21:17), and Katie Nemann was 31st (21:25).
WeekTenRegionalChampionship
As much as the Spartans struggled in week 9, week 10 was the team at its best. Turpin sneaked in to the 2006 State Championship after beating Loveland by 8 points to claim 4th place at Troy (top 4 advanced). Meredith Jaworek had her finest race since 2004, as she reminded everyone on the windy course just what a force she could be. She was 5th in an incredible 19:08. Sam Patty struggled with the strong winds at Troy, and finished 21st in 20:06. Kaitlin Price ran well, finishing 28th in 20:11. Lauren Young and Katie Nemann were 47th (20:25) and 77th (20:58), respectively. Jillian Jaworek ran hard after receiving a nasty gash from an opponent's spike in her upper thigh . She was 81st in 21:01. Elizabeth Eickhoff finished 118th on a bad ankle.

The
Spartan girls would end their season on a high note in Columbus, as they
showed that even 5 years removed from the program's State Championship
in 2001, they were still a force in Ohio cross country. The girls
finished 8th, their best since 2003 on the sport's biggest stage.
Meredith Jaworek was named All-Ohio for the second time in her historic
career, as she finished 23rd in 19:07. Sophomore Kaitlin Price
finished what had been a somewhat disappointing 2006 campaign with a
great performance at State; she was 43rd in 19:28. Sam Patty
concluded her 2006 coming-out party with a 54th place finish (19:40).
Lauren Young finished off her first season with a 102nd place finish
(20:13), and was a huge contributor in Turpin's late season success.
Katie Nemann ran great in Columbus, finishing 109th in 20:24, and fellow
freshman Jillian Jaworek was
One of the greatest team's in the storied history of Turpin girls cross country, the 2006 squad was one to remember. The Spartans will return all but 2 of their varsity runners in '07, but replacing 4-year letter-winner Meredith Jaworek will be a tough task. Still, the future looks bright for the Turpin girls; stay tuned to see if they can make their 7th appearance in Columbus in 8 years.
Thanks to the parents, athletes, and supporters of Turpin Cross Country who made this season one of the greatest in school history. Congratulations on an awesome year!
