2006 BOYS AND GIRLS FAVC CHAMPIONS SWEEP!
TURPIN WINS BOTH
CONFERENCE TITLES FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 1981 HARRISON - On an historic day for Turpin Cross Country, the boys' and girls' teams swept the FAVC Championships with convincing victories over the former champs, Kings. Dozens of personal best times were recorded for Turpin runners, on a day when the Spartans took home both trophies for the first time in 25 years. Turpin's two championships were somewhat similar in build: each featured the team's two frontrunners shining brightly, with huge days from the pack to seal the deal. Seniors Ryan Kiracofe and Meredith Jaworek took home the individual championships (Kiracofe's first, Jaworek's second), and junior studs Kyle Rewick and Sam Patty were close seconds in their respective races. The Spartans recorded another unprecedented feat on Saturday: all fourteen varsity runners won spots on the All-FAVC teams. Both Turpin coaches, Jim Gossett and Missy Siemers, took home Coach of the Year honors.
After eight consecutive years of Kings conference championships, the Spartan guys' team put forward a courageous, yet expected, team effort to bring home the title. As leaders Ryan Kiracofe and Kyle Rewick coasted through nearly two miles of the race, the rapidly improving pack recorded a host of personal best times. Drew DiSabatino claimed first team All-FAVC honors, finishing 7th in a career best time of 17:20. Turpin's Superfrosh continued their incredible coming-out party, both posting personal bests: Nick El-Khoury was 8th in 17:24, and Dave Rodriguez was 9th in 17:28. The varsity team's newest member, Rob DiMartino, continued his surprising late season run with a great time of 17:29, and junior Ben Wagner recorded his best time in what has been a whirlwind season (17:40, 12th). All seven members of the varsity team (ranked #5 in Cincinnati entering the weekend) won All-FAVC team honors, and hope they've set the tone for a memorable run through the state tournament, beginning next week at Districts.
Revenge was sweet for the Spartan girls' team, as they avenged their tie-breaker loss to Kings in the conference meet a year ago. Incredibly, six of Turpin's seven varsity runners recorded career-best times on Saturday. Meredith Jaworek brought home her second FAVC Individual Championship, and ran the fastest race of her already illustrious career, in 18:50. Junior Sam Patty's incredible season continued, as she was a close second in 18:50.7. A catalyst for Turpin's incredible shift from Regional hopefuls to State contenders has been Lauren Young, whose rapid improvement from a track-only runner to a cross country star has been a huge boost for the Spartans. Young was 4th in 19:43. Kaitlin Price was a strong 5th in 19:44. The girls' version of the Superfrosh, Katie Nemann and Jillian Jaworek, were 8th in a personal-best of 20:11, and 12th in a personal-best of 20:38, respectively. Elizabeth Eickhoff was 14th in 20:50, as she took the final slot on the All-FAVC Second team. Now the girls' team, ranked #2 in Cincinnati and #4 in Ohio entering the weekend, will look to continue the squad's return to glory with its first District title since 2003.
