2006 BOYS AND GIRLS REGIONAL QUALIFIERS

MOVIN' ON

BOTH TEAMS TAKE 3RD PLACE AT DISTRICTS; GIRLS STUMBLE AS BOYS "PACK IT UP"

LAKOTA - For the second year in a row, both of Turpin's varsity teams have advanced to the OHSAA Regional Championships at Troy.  The boys and girls teams each won 3rd place in their respective races, as the top 4 teams advanced to next weekend's meet, the last stop before Columbus and the State meet.  The girls had an unexpected slip-up, as their dreams of a fourth-ever district championship faded shortly into Saturday's race.  But the point is, as stated by many Spartan athletes and fans this weekend, that the girls live to see another day, and have a fresh shot next weekend.  The guys team performed on par with expectations, finishing third in a race in which they were predicted to finish just that.

The girls team, ranked #2 in the city entering the week, was led by a courageous effort from junior Sam Patty (right).  Her 4th place finish (20:02) on an extremely slow and muddy Voice of America Park course was enough to earn her First Team All-Southwest District honors.  Despite not having her best day, senior Meredith Jaworek was a strong 9th, in 20:24.  Kaitlin Price was 18th in 20:48, and Lauren Young had a rare off-race, finishing 26th in 21:17.  Turpin's 5th runner, Kathryn Nemann, was 31st in 21:25.  The girls finished with 88 points, 15 behind champions Mason, and 12 behind runners-up Oak Hills.

The guys team continued its recent success, doing something it had struggled to do earlier in season: meet expectations.  Although senior Ryan Kiracofe struggled to pick up the pace after hanging back early (4th, 17:01), junior Kyle Rewick continued his late-season roll, finishing 5th in 17:13.  The emergence of Turpin's solidest boys pack in recent memory continued on Saturday, as the younger Spartans continued to perform well on the big stage.  Nicholas El-Khoury was 18th in 17:54, Drew DiSabatino was 23rd in 18:00, and Dave Rodriguez was 26th in 18:02.  The guys finished with 76 points, 24 behind champions St. Xavier, and 14 behind Sycamore.

The Spartan JV Teams will be competing at the JV District Championships on Tuesday night at Voice of America Park in Lakota.

Both Varsity teams have advanced to the OHSAA Regional Championships in Troy, OH, next Saturday.  Check back for schedules and more.
