FOR TURPIN'S NINE RUNNERS IN

THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN COLUMBUS

ON SATURDAY, IT WAS A DAY OF

HOPEFUL BEGINNINGS AND SUCCESSFUL ENDINGS

COLUMBUS - One of the greatest seasons in the storied history of Turpin cross country drew to a close Saturday afternoon, as the girls' team and the guys' two individual qualifiers competed at the State Championship in Columbus.  On a beautiful day for racing in one of the country's wildest cross country atmospheres, the Spartan girls took 8th place in their return to state after a one year absence.

The girls were led once again by senior captain Meredith Jaworek, whose 23rd place finish (19:07) landed her on the First Team All-Ohio for the second time in her outstanding career.  Though Saturday's effort wasn't her top race of the season, her great finish was a fitting end to what will be remembered as one of the greatest careers in Turpin history.  Meredith's four years, that began under the influence of Turpin greats like Carolyn Rauen and her older sisters Jacqueline and Olivia,  included her two All-Ohio selections (including 9th place in 2004), three state appearances, and two FAVC titles.

Sophomore Kaitlin Price finished what has been an up-and-down season on a positive note Saturday, as she was 43rd in 19:28.  One of Turpin's brightest young stars, Kaitlin set a great benchmark upon which to improve in her next two state appearances.  Junior Sam Patty wrapped up a terrific season with a 54th place finish (19:40), highlighted by a great charge late in the race.  One of Turpin's most pleasant surprises this season was the emergence of junior Lauren Young, who finished 102nd in 20:13.  The always impressive freshman Kathryn Nemann was 109th in 20:24, and her 9th-grade sidekick Jillian Jaworek flew down the home stretch to claim 123rd in 20:42.  Senior Liz Eickhoff was unable to complete the race's first mile, as she went down with an ankle injury that has yet to be diagnosed.  Early speculation indicates that it could be a stress fracture.

The girls' 8th place finish was their best since claiming 4th in 2003.  The overall champions on Saturday were St. Ursula.  Turpin's finishes in the State Championship since their first appearance in 2000:

Year        Team Finish                    Top THS Finisher

2000        9th                              Carolyn Rauen (Fr, 17th, 18:46)

2005        DNQ

2006        8th                              Meredith Jaworek (Sr, 23rd, 19:07)

Turpin's two boys qualifiers to the State meet entered the race in two completely different states of mind.  Junior Kyle Rewick, making his first appearance in Columbus, looked to get a taste of one of the sport's best atmospheres, get a great time, and compete as well as possible.  Compete he did, as Kyle finished 46th overall in 16:34, near his personal best time of 16:31.  Rewick will look to take another crack at Columbus and improve upon his performance in his senior year.

For senior Ryan Kiracofe, the 2006 State meet was the second go-round, and he looked to improve on his 39th place finish a year ago.  Though Kiracofe didn't quite meet the lofty goal of Top 15, he finished a solid 21st in 16:03, which tied his personal best time.  Like Meredith Jaworek, Kiracofe's Top 25 finish earned him All-Ohio honors.

The boys' team title was won by LaSalle for the second consecutive year.  The individual champion was Emil Heineking of Chardon.
