2006 GIRLS STATE FINALISTS

ONE MORE RACE

M. JAWOREK LEADS GIRLS BACK TO COLUMBUS AFTER 1 YEAR ABSENCE; KIRACOFE, REWICK ADVANCE AS GUYS FALL SHORT BUT UPSET ELDER, SYCAMORE

TROY, OH - Turpin's performances at the Regional Championships on October 28 were, from beginning to end, spectacular.  After falling short on the same course a year ago, the girls team added yet another chapter to one of the most storied histories in Ohio cross country, by overcoming wind and mud to take 4th place in Troy.  For the girls, it's on to Columbus, where Spartans including Carolyn Rauen, Melanie Price, and Corey Randall won the state title just 5 years ago.  For the guys' team, the end was bittersweet.  Though their outside shot at advancing to Columbus was just that, an outside shot, the Spartan boys shocked the crowd by upsetting perennial powers Elder and Sycamore, en route to a 5th place finish.  Arguably one of the two greatest boys' teams in school history, Turpin finished just 30 points behind 4th place St. Xavier.

The girls' redemption was especially sweet for senior captain Meredith Jaworek, whose junior year never lived up to her amazing run through the state tournament as a sophomore.  Jaworek was 4th in the regional and 9th in the state in 2004, and after failing to qualify out of Troy in '05, her 5th place finish on Saturday was nothing short of incredible.  She beat out Colerain star Erin Ragouzis in 19:08.90.  Although not her best race of the season, junior Sam Patty finished a strong 21st in 20:06.12.  Kaitlin Price was 28th in 20:11.54, Lauren Young was 47th in 20:25.34, and Kathryn Nemann was 77th in 20:58.25.  Jillian Jaworek and Elizabeth Eickhoff were 81st and 118th, respectively.

Saturday marked the end of a tumultuous but ultimately successful season for the boys' team, as it finished 5th at Troy.  The team's 30-point defeat at the hands of St. Xavier should, however, be taken with a grain of salt.  Finishing behind LaSalle and St. X. should earn the Spartans the #3 spot in the Cincinnati Enquirer poll at season's end; the team's best such mark in over a decade.  The Spartans upset Elder, a team many favored to advance over Centerville and Vandalia Butler, as well as Sycamore, the runners-up in last week's District Championships.  Ryan Kiracofe will make his second consecutive appearance in Columbus as an individual qualifier.  Though not his best race, he finished 10th in 16:33.63.  Junior Kyle Rewick shined in a courageous, 16:36.22 effort that was good enough for 11th place.  This will be Rewick's first trip to Columbus.  Though the other five varsity team members failed to qualify, the pack ran incredibly well.  The Superfrosh wrapped up an incredible first year; Nick El-Khoury was 57th in 17:26.81, and Dave Rodriguez was 60th in 17:28.17.  Drew DiSabatino was 70th in 17:35.05, Rob DiMartino was 74th (17:38.40), and Ben Wagner was 92nd (18:00.74).
