One Spartan Competing In Columbus
Disappointing End in Dayton for 3200m Relay Teams; Meghan Rewick Qualifies for State Meet in High Jump
Wednesday’s regional competition in Dayton officially marked the end of four Spartan senior’s careers at Turpin High School. Three days after graduation, seniors Sam Patty, Rob DiMartino, Kyle Rewick, and Ben Wagner, along with Kaitlin Price, Lauren Young, Adrian Grogan, and Nicholas El-Khoury donned their uniform for the last time this season in order to compete in the 4 x 800m relay. Competing in perhaps the toughest region in the state, both teams knew qualifying for the state meet would require a strong performance from all members. Unfortunately, neither relay team was able to rise to the challenge on that day.
The Turpin girls entered the race having won the league meet in 9:47 and placing third at the district meet in 9:50. However, the girls were not able to improve upon either of their times. Racing in the first event of the day, all of the Turpin girls ran a slower than average time, finishing fifteenth in 10:00.5. Like the girls, Wednesday was not a good day for the guy’s 3200m-relay team. The guys entered the race having won the league meet in 8:12 and placing third in the district race. In addition to a possible state meet qualification, the guys also looked to break Turpin’s 3200m record, 8:07.0 set in 1992. This record seemed entirely within reach, only requiring each leg on the relay to run just above a second faster. However, at the end of the day, the old school record still stood. Slow times caused the Turpin guys to finish tenth in 8:24.
The only bright spot from Wednesday’s competition came from freshman Meghan Rewick in the high jump. Rewick’s jump of 5’ 2” was good enough to earn her fourth place, and a spot in the State meet next week. Although four other girls also jumped 5’ 2”, Rewick was the only one that reached this height on her first attempt, with no prior misses at a lower height. Rewick will jump next Saturday (June 7) at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.
In Friday’s events, Hannah Zimmerman was the sole Turpin representative to compete. Having qualified in the pole vault, Zimmerman looked to make her mark in the Dayton region. Her 9’ 6” vault matched her PR and was good for tenth place. As a sophomore, Zimmerman will certainly look to move up the next two years.
